THE TRIP

The Trip es un proyecto desarrollado en colaboración entre María José Escolar y el bailarín y
filósofo Fernando López y presentado en Jameel Arts Center (Dubai) en mayo de 2021.

Este viaje habla de la movilidad como forma de vida y como perspectiva para la creación
artística de dos artistas que viven, trabajan y crean «en tránsito»: María José Escolar y
Fernando López Rodríguez, españoles residentes en Abu Dhabi en aquella época, que, además,
han tenido «otras vidas» en lugares como Francia, Alemania, Marruecos, Siria, Bélgica, China,
Gabón…

En este proyecto dual, la artista visual y el bailarín-filósofo combinan sus lenguajes artísticos
para componer una «exposición bailada» en la que las obras de Escolar serán transitadas,
recorridas y rodeadas por la danza de López.

María José Escolar presenta, como tótems, una serie de bases circulares que soportan cilindros
transparentes de metacrilato. En su interior guardan, como si fueran fragmentos de vida, un
puzzle de pinturas y dibujos dispuestos sobre un soporte cilíndrico que está varado sobre una
base de arena que lo cubre parcialmente. La artista propone al visitante un recorrido circular
en torno a estas obras con el fin de realizar un viaje perceptivo en el que la mirada se
coreografía desde el principio hasta el final.

La danza de López navega alrededor de estos elementos escultóricos, como una trenza de
gestos bailados que guían al espectador-visitante de una obra a otra. El movimiento también
se apoya en un fondo sonoro que nos habla, como las obras del pintor, del viaje, no solo como
concepto filosófico sino como historia, y que se construye entrelazando sonidos, música y
memoria oral de España y los Emiratos Árabes Unidos, haciendo uso del mismo principio
compositivo utilizado por la pintora: el viaje como una historia; la historia como un “mosaico”
de recuerdos que están libremente vinculados entre sí.

THE TRIP

The Trip is a project developed in collaboration between María José Escolar and the dancer
and philosopher Fernando Lopez and presented in Jameel Arts Center (Dubai) in Mayo de
2021.

This journey talks about the mobility as a way of life and as a perspective for the artistic
creation of two artists who live, work and create «in transit»: María José Escolar and Fernando López Rodríguez, Spaniards residing in Abu Dhabi at that time, who, in addition, they have had
«other lives» in places like France, Germany, Morocco, Syria, Belgium, China, Gabon, etc.

In this dual project, the painter and the dancer-philosopher combine their artistic languages ​​to
compose a «danced exhibition» in which Escolar’s works will be moved, toured and traveled by López’s dance.

Escolar has, as totems of different sizes, a series of circular bases that support transparent
methacrylate cylinders. Inside they keep, as if they were fragments of life, a puzzle of paintings
and drawings arranged on a cylindrical support that is stranded on a sand base that partially
covers it. The artist proposes to the visitor a circular route around these works in order to
make a perceptual journey in which the gaze is choreographed from the beginning to the end:
in this way, each visitor-spectator can carry out, within each one of the works, his own
journey.

López’s dance navigates around these sculptural elements, choreographed like a braid of
danced gestures that guide the viewer-visitor from one work to another. The movement also
rests on a sound background that speaks to us, like the works of the painter, of the trip, not
only as a philosophical concept but as a story, and that is built by weaving together sounds,
music and oral memory of Spain and the United Arab Emirates, making use of the same
compositional principle used by the painter: the trip as a story; the story as a “patchwork” of
memories that are freely linked to each other.
